Who are you? No, really, who are you? This question lies at the heart of Derek DelGaudio’s one-man theatrical show, In & Of Itself, which was met with such success (DelGaudio performed it in front of live audiences more than 500 times) that it was made into a movie, now streaming on Hulu. In & Of Itself begins with unknowing audience members choosing from an array of cards that all start with “I AM…” I am an accountant, I am a healer, I am a son, and so on. Through a variety of techniques including personal stories, sleight of hand magic tricks, and lots of audience involvement, DelGaudio leaves the audience and at-home viewer mystified by illuminating what it means to be human. He taps into every human’s deepest desire to be truly seen, both for the descriptors we give ourselves and beyond. It’s hard to sum up into words, but like art can do, I felt the performance in my bones and so know it is worth sharing. You’ll have to see it to believe it for yourself. I am a mother… I am an extrovert… I am sensitive. Who are you?
